Quick Links
As players work through Chapter 1 ofDeltarune, they will be required to solve a variety of puzzles and to complete numerous combat encounters, some of which can prove difficult to overcome. Additionally, players have opportunities to pick up many items, some of which can be easily missed, and even to fight a secret boss during this first chapter. For those players who are interested in experiencing all of that content, or are struggling to get past a tricky section, this 100% walkthrough ofDeltaruneChapter 1 is here to help.
While the ways in which a player’s actions in Chapter 1 affect Chapter 2 are well documented, that is not the case forDeltarune’s third and fourth chapters. As such, this walkthrough may need small updates if future chapters ultimately alter what can be considered 100% completion.
Deltarune Chapter 1: Violence vs. Nonviolence
It is first important to establish that players can pursue either Violence (defeating enemies with damage) or Nonviolence (sparing enemies or using Ralsei’s Pacify magic) in Chapter 1. While both approaches are perfectly acceptable, and do not seem to significantly impactDeltarune’s second chapter, players who go full Nonviolence will have an opportunity after the chapter’s final boss that players who have even one count of Violence will not have. Additionally, a player’s Violence count is recorded in their save file, and it may ultimately prove important in future chapters.
Players who wish to pursue Nonviolence should familiarize themselves with Kris’s acts, particularlyWarning, which is very important whenSusieis in the party.
Deltarune Chapter 1: Dark Dollars
Players should also know that any TP that they have at the end of a battle is converted into Dark Dollars (D$), which can be used to buy a variety of items during Chapter 1. As such,Deltaruneplayersshould attempt to have a lot of TP at the end of their fights to maximize the currency that they earn.
Make a Vessel & School - Deltarune Chapter 1 Walkthrough
Make a Vessel
Players will beginDeltaruneChapter 1 by creating a Vessel. While a player’s selections do not have any notable impact on Chapters 1 and 2, they are stored in the save file. As such, players may want to put some effort towards creating a desirable Vessel, as it may come up in subsequent chapters.
This guide will be updated with more information about Vessel creation if it is important in future chapters.
To School
After making a Vessel, players will take control of Kris, and they should make their way through the house and exit via the door on the right side of the living room. Upon exiting, players will be treated to a short cutscene in whichTorieldrives Kris to school.
At School
At the end of the cutscene, players will find themselves in Kris’s classroom, and they should speak with Noelle, a reindeer-like monster who is at the top-left desk. Players should now confirm that they would like Noelle to ask about creating a partner group to trigger a sequence in which Susie enters the room.
Players must now follow Susie through the school’s hallways and into a closet. After walking through the closet for some time, Kris will fall into a new area: the Dark World.
The Dark World & Castle Town - Deltarune Chapter 1 Walkthrough
To Castle Town
After regaining control ofKris, players should follow the path until they reach a fork. Here, players should go down and interact with a hole in the wall to claim aGlowstone. Players can then return to the fork and continue along the path to the right.
Not long after the fork, players will encounter aneye puzzle, and they should interact with the hole beneath thesecond eyeand then the hole beneath thethird eyeto solve it. Players should then continue to the right until they run into a mound, and interacting with that object will reveal Susie.
As the player continues moving to the right, Susie will run away, and Kris must follow her, passing through a section where they are intended to dodge white spade projectiles. Players will find Susie at the end of this section, and they should speak with her and go up to Castle Town.
In Castle Town & To Field
Players will encounter a hooded figure upon entering Castle Town, and they should listen to their prophecy. Players must then do battle with Lancer, a character that will retreat after a few rounds of combat. The hooded figure is then revealed to be Ralsei, and he will join forces with Kris.
Players should now leave Castle Town and follow the path down and to the right. Ralsei will provide a combat tutorial along this path, and he will give Kris a Manual at its conclusion. After receiving the Manual, players should continue right to reach a large door that leads to the Field.
If the player keeps the Manual, a stand for it will appear in Kris’s room in Castle Town in Chapter 2. If the player discards the Manual twice, a trash can will appear instead of the stand.
The Field - Deltarune Chapter 1 Walkthrough
In the Field
Follow the path to reach Lancer, and head down to access a screen with a single tree. Collect thetwo Dark Candyfrom the tree before returning to Lancer and continuing along the path to the right.
Along the path, players will encounter Topchef, a yellow NPC. After talking to that character, players should interact with the object that is just above him and take a piece to obtain theBroken Cakekey item.
Just past Topchef, players will find another tree that yieldstwo Dark Candy, and there is a puzzle to its right. To solve thisclock puzzle inDeltaruneChapter 1, players should interact with the clock on the wall and stand on the squares on the floor when they become illuminated, moving so that Ralsei steps on any secondary squares.
Beyond the puzzle, players will see a chest that they cannot immediately reach. To access that chest, players should follow the path and go left at the first fork, and it holds theWhite Ribbon.
Players should now return to the fork, go down, and follow the path until they findSusie. With a group of three, it will now be possible to solve the clock puzzle on the screen to the left, and players should return to the door where they found Susie when that puzzle has been addressed. Here, players will encounterC. Round, an enemy that they must battle.
Players who are pursuing Nonviolence should make sure to use theWarning actstraightaway.
Players can now continue along the path to encounter a character who looks like apuzzle piece, and that NPC will offer the party a tutorial at a cost. That said, players who repeatedly refuse to pay the character will still be given access to the screen to the left. Here, players will find several puzzle pieces that reveal information aboutDeltarune, and they shouldthrow $1 into the holeat the top to get some special dialogue in Chapter 2.
Players should now go right, complete a combat encounter initiated by Lancer, and enter a screen with a puzzle. To solve this puzzle, players must position Kris next to theboxesat the bottom, press theinteract inputto push them, and move them on top of the two buttons.
Once the floor puzzle is solved, players should go up until they are forced to go right. Players will now encounter awall puzzlethat centers around spades and diamonds, and here is how to solve it:
Solving this puzzle gives players access to a chest to the right, which holdsBroken Key C.
Players should now head down and to the right to access theGreat Board, which they must traverse by timing their movements to avoid the illuminated spaces. At the end of this section, players will encounterK. Round, and they can use theDeep Bowact to cause its crown to fall.
The Forest - Deltarune Chapter 1 Walkthrough
In the Forest
After making a save at the start of the Forest, players should follow the path, upon which they will encounter Susie and Lancer twice, until they reach a spinning obstacle. Here, players should go up and left to reach a chest that holds theRagger.
Players should now return to the first spinning obstacle and follow the path to the right to reach a room with awall puzzle(and Susie and Lancer). Players can solve the puzzle by taking these actions, and they should head to the right when the job is done:
Players will now encounter yet anotherwall puzzle, and they can solve it with these steps:
Solving this puzzle removes some nearby spikes, giving players access to a path that leads to a chest with theDice Brace.
Players can now return to the critical path and solve athird wall puzzleby taking these actions:
With the puzzle solved, and the nearby spikes removed, players should head up to trigger a battle withClover. Players who want to get through this fight without using Violence are advised toselect the Manual twice(from the Items category) and then use Spare.
After dealing with Clover, players will enter theBake Salearea, and they can buy items from all three vendors (including Susie and Lancer). Players should then use the path to the left of the vendors to travel up and reachMalius, an NPC that willfix theBroken Cake. Players should then use thedoornear the Bake Sale save point to travel to the Field and backtrack until they reachTopchef. Players who give the repaired cake to that NPC will receive theSpin Cake.
Players can get additional Spin Cakes by talking to Topchef again after they have used the one that they have in their inventory.
Players should now return to theBake Saleand follow the path to the right of the vendors. On the next screen, players will see achestthat appears to be inaccessible, and they can reach it by using the invisible path shown in the preceding image. The chest holds40 Dark Dollars.
On the next screen, players should make their way down and to the left, taking care to avoid the Scissor Dancers, to reach a chest with aRevive Mint. Players should then go to the bottom of the loop that is just before that chest and use an invisible path to head downward. Players who continue along this path will ultimately reach a chest that holdsBroken Key B.
Players can now return to the Scisscor Dancers section and exit to the right to encounter Lancer. This encounter will lead to assembling a machine, and theFlame headprovides the biggest benefit in a future combat encounter.
The machine’s other parts, and colors, do not seem to have any gameplay implications, though certain stat levels will lead to unique dialogues.
After building the machine, players will enter a screen where they must avoid the attacks of the Starwalker Bird. Players should exit that screen to the right and then reenter it. Players must now run to the left to find abell, which they should interact with before going back to the right. As players follow the path to the right, they will find that a new NPC, theoriginal Starwalker, has appeared, and they should speak with him.
Players should now, once again, exit the Starwalker Bird’s room to the right. Players should thenrepeatedly enter and exit the bird’s roomuntil Kris is transported to an area with a single tree. There is a hidden NPC behind the tree, and players who interact with him will receive anEgg.
Upon leaving the hidden area with the Egg, players will find themselves back at the Bake Sale, and they must return to the screen that is beyond the Starwalker Bird. Here, players should make their way to thecenter of the loopthat is above the spinning obstacles andinteract with the blackness. This action will cause a tree on the right side of the screen to disappear, allowing Kris to continue forward.
Players will now encounter Lancer and Susie, and there is a maze beyond them. To get through the maze, players should always select thepaths that Lancer and Susie do not take.
After passing through the maze, players will do battle with Lancer and Susie, and they can defeat them by dealing damage or using theAnything and X-Anything actson Lancer. Notably, players must use the Anything act to deliver the “final blow” to Lancer if they opt to pursue that path.
Once the battle comes to an end, players should follow the path to the right. Ultimately, players will enter a section where they must dodge projectiles, and Kris and Ralsei will end up in aprison cellat the end.
The Castle - Deltarune Chapter 1 Walkthrough
In the Castle
In the cell, players should interact with the shackles on the wall to obtain theIron Shackle. Players should then interact with the cracks in the wall, then the moss on the ground, and then Ralsei. This final action will cause Susie to speak, and players should take these actions to help her solve awall puzzle:
After a short sequence that follows Susie, she frees Kris and Ralsei, allowing players to exit the cell and make their way to an elevator. When that lift comes to a stop, players should exit and head left to reach a room with adiamond-shaped door. Players who speak with the Rudinn on the right side of this room will have a chance to apologize for Violence they may have committed against other Rudinns, an action that will lower the Violence count by one. Players who have not Violenced any Ruddins will receive aChoco Diamond.
Players should now exit the room and use the nearbystairsto reach the Castle’s second floor. Here, players should follow the path to the right, avoiding the spinning obstacles, and solve the “puzzle” initiated by Rouxls Kaard. Players should then return to the room with the spinning obstacles and go down to find a chest with aClubs Sandwich.
There are stairs at the top of the room with the spinning obstacles, and players should go right after using them to find aheart-shaped door. Inspecting all four beds in this room awards Kris with theBed Inspector title. Additionally, players who have Violenced no more than two Hathies can speak with the NPC on the right to decrease their Violence by one.
Players should now leave the room and use the stairs on the left side of the screen to ascend to an area with Scissor Dancers. Players should exit this room to the right, solve another of Rouxls Kaard’s “puzzles,” and then return to the previous room. There are three pictures on the top wall, and interacting with them will cause a chest with aRevive Mintto appear at the bottom.
The stairs next to the chest lead up to an area with ashopfrom which players can buy several items, and it is recommended that they pick up a Brave Ax, a Dainty Scarf, and three Amber Cards.
Players should now use the elevator that is just above the shop to return to the first floor. Players should then exit the lift, make their way down and to the right to reach theelevator that goes to the prison, and select"??????“after interacting with the buttons inside. When this elevator comes to a stop, players should exit, descend the stairs, interact with the cell at the end, and agree to play the prisoner’s game.
Back to Field
When the conversation with the prisoner comes to an end, players should use the elevator to return to the first floor and exit the screen at the bottom toleave the castle. Players should then use the door that they encounter to travel to theField, go left, and visit theShop. Players should thentalkto Seam, the shopkeeper, about theStrange Prisonerto obtainBroken Key A. Players can also buy the Spookysword, and some Darkburgers, from Seam while they are at the shop.
Back to Bake Sale
Players should now have all three Broken Key pieces, and they can use the door on the screen to the right of Seam’s Shop to travel to theBake Sale. Players should then follow the path up and have Malius fix the key.
Back to Castle
With the Prison Key in hand, players should use the nearby door toreturn to the Castle, use the prison elevator on the first floor to return to “??????,” and interact with the cell once again. After using the key, players can enter the cell to initiate a battle withJevil.
There are two ways by which players can defeat Jevil: they canattack him, or they can repeatedly use theHypnosis act(and hit him with Ralsei’s Pacify magic when he is tired). Players who choose to beat Jevil with damage will receive theDevilsknife(an ax for Susie that has +5 AT, +4 Magic, and reduces Rude Buster’s TP cost by 10%), and those that use Hypnosis will receiveJevilstail(an armor piece with +2 DF, +2 AT, and +2 Magic). Additionally, all players will receive aShadow Crystal, which they can use to trigger a unique dialogue.
This fight can be quite difficult, and players who are struggling to bring the foe down are advised to read thisguide to beating Jevil inDeltarune.
Once Jevil is defeated, players should use the elevator to return to Floor 1F, hop in the elevator at the top of the screen, and ride it to thearea with the shop. Here, players should use the stairs at the top of the screen and walk forward to initiate a battle withK. Round. The Susie’s Idea and Throw acts can be used to get through this encounter.
After fighting K. Round, players should follow the path to pass through a room with a throne. Lancer is beyond that room, and finding him will ultimately lead to a fight withKing.
Players have two options for this battle: they candeal damageto King, or they can simplywait for enough turns to pass(using the Courage act and Defend to minimize incoming damage). Both approaches will ultimately lead to the end of the fight, and the specifics of the resolution depend on whether the player has used Violence or Nonviolence throughout their playthrough.
Players who pursued Nonviolence will now have the opportunity to speak with many of the NPCs that they encountered in Chapter 1.
All that is left to do now is follow the path to reach the fountain. This leads to the fountain’s sealing and Kris and Susie’s return to the Light World.
Light World - Deltarune Chapter 1 Walkthrough
The End
Players can nowreturn to Kris’s house, where they will enter their room and end Chapter 1. However, there are a few things that players should definitely do first:
Deltarune Chapter 1: Missable Items & Secrets
While players who follow the 100% walkthrough will find everything in Chapter 1, something akin to a checklist may still be of interest. Here is such a checklist:
This list does not contain missable dialogue, though players who are diligent about talking to NPCs, including those that appear in the Light World at the end of the chapter, should see most of it. That said, it is not possible to see every text box on a single playthrough. Additionally, the list does not contain consumable items that can be missed, nor does it contain the items that can be purchased from the chapter’s three shops.
