Summary

Everyone knows Marvel Studios is hard at work preparing a brand newX-Menfilm to release somewhere down the line over the next few years. One Hollywood name, who is experienced with the mutant franchise, wants to board the project and bring the team into the MCU.

Thanks toDeadpool & Wolverineand the upcomingAvengers: Doomsday,Marvelstill hasn’t really said goodbye to the 20th Century Fox era ofX-Menfilms. Many assumed Marvel would fully revamp the mutant team upon getting the film rights back when Disney bought Fox back in 2019. The past five years have proved that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is content taking his time to get the mutant team right while alsobringing back familiar faces from earlierX-Menfilms. Whether you agree that having Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden (among others) return for more mutant adventures inAvengers: Doomsdayis a good idea or not, there seems to be no rush to introduce new X-Men into the MCU whatsoever. That being said, one director has thrown their hat in the ring for the opportunity to revamp the beloved superteam in the future.

While promoting the newest season ofLove, Death & Robots, Tim Miller was asked about reviving the superhero genre byThe Hollywood Reporter. TheDeadpooldirector’s mind immediately went to the X-Men.“I think that Marvel has this secret weapon they haven’t been able to unveil yet, which is the whole X-Men universe—which is what got me into comics,“he explained. The X-Men have beena gateway into superhero comicsfor many people over the many decades since their 1963 debut, but Miller clearly knows his stuff, even having a specific idea in mind for an X-Men movie that could’ve come to fruition under Fox’s watch.

“The X-Men are my favorite characters. I wrote Kevin Feige, and I’m like, ‘If there was ever anything that you would let me do in the Marvel Universe, please, theX-Men would be it.’ I had an X-Men movie in development at Fox when the merger happened, which would have been awesome: [the story was based on]X-Men#143, which wasHome AlonemeetsAlien”

Tim Miller Would Be An Intriguing Directorial Choice For AnX-MenFilm From Marvel Studios

Tim Miller has had quite an interesting career path since co-founding Blur Studio in 1995. With a background in animation, he got his start in the industry working on short films and doing visual effects work. Eventually, he’d move into video games, working on projects likeMass Effect 2andStar Wars: The Old Republic. Miller would then become a creative team member on big-budget Hollywood films likeScott Pilgrim vs. the WorldandThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoobefore becoming a second unit director onThor: The Dark Worldin 2013. Then he directedDeadpoolin 2016, and the world has been his oyster ever since, having worked onTerminator: Dark Fate,Borderlands, and all threeSonic the Hedgehogfilms.

While Miller has plenty of Marvel experience under his belt withDeadpoolandThor: The Dark World, it remains to be seen if Feige would give him the reins on anX-Menfilm. After all, the last feature film Miller directed wasTerminator: Dark Fateback in 2019, which is rumored to have lost over $100 million at the box office. Miller also directed the reshoots for theBorderlandsmovie, andwe all know how that particular film turned out. Miller’s original X-Men idea, based on 1981’sX-Men#143, would’ve seemingly centered around Kitty Pryde alone at home around Christmas being tormented by a demon… not exactly a great introductory film into the MCU, even if it would probably make for a fun ride.

At the end of the day, if Kevin Feige wants Tim Miller to direct anX-Menmovie in the MCU, the man will clearly be waiting by the phone.
