Dandadan’s imaginative worldbuilding hinges oncrafting captivating characters with backstories that leave a lasting impression on the viewer. As important as its main cast is, the series would have never been as entertaining as it is without its intimidating but sometimes hilarious yokai and alien villains. Every arc introduces a new challenge for Momo and Okarun that pushes them to evolve into a better version of themselves, and it would have been impossible without its many supporting characters.
Among the several spirits introduced in the series, only a handful are powerful enough to pose a serious threat to the show’s deuteragonists. But Dandadan season 2 might debut its strongest yokai yet-one even Seiko Ayase won’t take lightly.
Who is the Strongest Spirit in the Series?
Although Turbo Granny, Evil Eye, and Acrobatic Silky Are Powerful, They Are Not the Strongest Yokai
As mentioned earlier,Momo and Okarun have confronted and bravely foughtseveral intimidating yokai, with bizarre supernatural powers. Among them, Turbo Granny stands out as the strongest spirit so far. Although she was the main antagonist in the Turbo Granny arc, the yokai has since become an indispensable part of Momo’s group.
Other than Turbo Granny, season 1 also introduced Acrobatic Silky, the spirit of a single mother who committed suicide after her daughter was taken away from her. While she was undoubtedly quite strong, Okarun still managed to defeat her with Momo’s help.
The season 2 trailer gives viewers glimpses of Okarun fighting another intimidatingyokai known as the Evil Eye. He is a ruthless and sadistic spirit who wants to take revenge for the wrongs that have been done to him. Although he is intimidating, Evil Eye is also not the strongest spirit in the series. Dandadan’s season 2 is all set to pick things up right where season 1 left off, diving deep into the supernatural adventures Momo and her friends embark on in Daija Town.
While it’s currently not official how many episodes the second installment might have, looking at the previous season, it appears that the creators love to end episodes on a cliffhanger. Since the upcoming seasonwill feature the Cursed House arc, Evil Eye arc, and Kaiju arc, it will be the perfect opportunity to end the second installment on a cliffhanger as well by introducing Reiko Kashima, the strongest spirit in the series.
Reiko Kashima: The Yokai Who Can’t Be Defeated
The Most Feared Spirit
During the Second World War, some regions in Kamigoe City were bombed indiscriminately, leading to the death of countless innocent civilians. Among the many people who died in the gruesome attacks was a young woman. While not much is known about her life,it is alluded to in the mangathat she had a loved one. But she sadly lost everything in the war, including her own life. The suffering and pain she endured were so immense and unbearable that she transformed into a dangerous spirit and eventually came to be known as Reiko Kashima.
Reiko is a strange yokai, as she spends most of her time looking at her reflection in her magic mirror. Her obsession borders on narcissism, hinting at a complex internal struggle that she likely cannot or does not want to put into words. She also cannot stand people who are cute or beautiful, as they make her feel insecure about her own looks. That’s why she has a preference for grotesque things since they ease her insecurities and make her feel more confident.
The Kamigoe Ruins, where she lives, are interestingly close to Momo and Okarun’s school. One day, Momo decides to take the shortcut through the area to get to school on time, not realizing that she will put her life in danger. That’s when she encounters Reiko Kashima. While she knows a spell that is known to make the spirit disappear, things take a dark turn when Kashima becomes aggressive.
While Momo somehow manages to trickthe yokai and reach her school in time, Reiko is not the kind of spirit that gives up easily. Later, when Seiko learns about what has happened, she realizes the gravity of the situation immediately. In order to acquaint Momo with the danger she is in, she sums up Kashima in a single sentence:
“Do you know why those ruins have remained untouched? Because no one can defeat Reiko Kashima.”
Momo will suddenly find herself in a terrifying situation that will not only test her power but also her courage. Meanwhile, Reiko won’t stop chasing her until she gets revenge for the humiliation she experienced because of the girl who not only dared to visit the Kamigoe Ruins but also deceived her. This conflict will set the stage for a rivalry that will end in perhaps the most unexpected ways imaginable. Unfortunately, fans who are curious to know how this saga will transpire might have to wait for Dandadan’s second season.
