7The Release Date
October Is Looking Good
The Outer Worldswas released in 2019, so even though the sequel was teased in 2021, it has been quite some time between series entries. The Outer Worlds 2will launch onOctober 29, 2025,for Xbox fans on Game Pass, like most big first-party games, along with PC platforms and PS5. UnlikeIndiana Jones and the Great Circle, PS5 fans won’t have to wait for this one.
October is shaping up to be a big month for games now thatThe Outer Worlds 2has a release date.Action game fans can look forward toNinja Gaiden 4andGhost of Yotei, monster-collecting fans will getDigimon Story: Time StrangerandPokemon Legends: Z-A,and there is even a survival horror game inDirective 8020.WillThe Outer Worlds 2be the best of that bunch?
6Who Are You?
An Earth Directorate Agent With A Limitless Background
Players will get to play as a new character in the sequel, an agent for the Earth Directorate. Obsidian Entertainment describes them as “Space Cowboys” or “Space Sky Marshals,” but players pick their background to describe their hero as whoever theywant to roleplay as, from a Lawbringer to a Gambler.
The game’s main colony, Arcadia, is overseen by a faction known as The Protectorate. However, other factions are also vying for power, ranging from the criminal underground to corporations. Players will not be alone either, as they can recruit several companions, including a fellow Earth Directorate agent named Niles.
5Traits And Skills
Further Character Customization
After creating their character and choosing a background, players can then go into Traits and Skills to give their character an extra boost. Brawny is a Trait, for example, that will give players a boost in strength during combat, and it can be useful for environmental traversal as well. There is a door in the preview that can be solved through Engineering or Brawny, with Brawny having the characters rip open the door with brute strength.
Obsidian Entertainment wants to stress that there are several ways to get through any situation, which is how good RPGs are built. There are more options for Skills compared to Traits, as seen in the breakdown, including characters favoring stealthwith the Sneak skill or Lockpick, which is also a stealthy Skill to bypass locks more quickly.
4Radio Stations
A Nod To Fallout
One of the coolest additions forThe Outer Worlds 2is theradio stations, which Obsidian is pulling from their time working onFallout: New Vegas. Players can listen to music as they explore the colony or mow down goons by the dozen. Radio stations can also influence gameplay, as NPCs will react differently depending on the station chosen.
An anti-Protectorate news feed may go down poorly in their HQ, for example, which should make for an interesting way for players to strategize their approach to certain situations. Strategies aside, it’ll just be cool to listen to old-timey songs in space.
3More Weapons And Zanier Ideas
Plus Throwables
Throwable weapons are new, like grenades, and Science Weapons return with some new additions, like a sword that players can time to the beat like a rhythm game to get an extra boost in attack power. Now there’s Science Armor too, like Gary, an entity who will envelop the player like a parasite and attack enemies if they get too close.
2Perks And Flaws
Go Dumb Or Go Home
Obsidian Entertainment name-droppedFallout: New Vegasagain when they started discussing Perks inThe Outer Worlds 2. There is one Perk called Pickpocket that lets players steal from enemies, or Bulletshield, which increases health and damage resistance, but enemies will target the player more than their allies. There are tons of Perks shown in the preview, but the more interesting aspect of a character’s build lies in theFlaws system, which returns fromThe Outer Worlds.
There are old favorites like Dumb, along with new ones. For example, Bad Knees will let players move faster while crouched, but when they stand up, a loud popping noise alerts enemies around them. The Kleptomaniac Flaw can cause stolen items to sell for more in shops, but players risk stealing even when they don’t want to, which could put them in a pickle
1A Third-Person Mode
And Increased Mobility
RPG fans will appreciate this, asThe Outer Worlds 2now allows players to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. Most first-person RPGsallow this, including Obsidian Entertainment games likeFallout: New Vegasand, most recently,Avowed.
This wasn’t the case forThe Outer Worlds, which the devs have now rectified based on player feedback. Also, traversal will be improved, as players will have more ways to interact with environments, like being able to double jump, which could be easier in third-person.
