TheCall of Duty: Modern Warfaresub-series hasn’t left the best impression recently. While 2022’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2was received well by fans and critics, the same can’t be said for2023’sModern Warfare 3. For the first time in franchise history,Modern Warfarereceived back-to-back releases, and that proved to be a fatal error, withMW3catching a lot of flak for its rushed campaign, reused multiplayer content, and lackluster post-launch support. By comparison,Call of Duty: Black Ops 6feels like the complete package.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6featured a full-length campaign, a substantial Zombies mode, and a bevy of brand-new multiplayer maps at launch, and its post-launch rollout has generally been quite smooth. Whenever the nextModern Warfareentry appears, it’ll need to take a lot of cues fromBlack Ops 6, and that should even extend to borrowing one of the game’s Field Upgrades.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Should Feature Its Own Version of BO6’s Sleeper Agent Field Upgrade
How Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Sleeper Agent Field Upgrade Compliments The Series' Personality
A brandnew Field Upgrade(special multiplayer ability with its own cooldown) introduced inCall of Duty: Black Ops 6, “Sleeper Agent” allows players to disguise themselves as an enemy soldier. When activated, Sleeper Agent makes it seem as though the player is on the opposing team, with their nameplate matching the opposing team’s color. The Sleeper Agent’s cover is only blown when they fire an unsilenced weapon, or when they’re hit by gadgets or Field Upgrades that use AI targeting systems, such as a sentry turret, UAV, or spring mine.
Only available at Level 51 and above, theSleeper Agent Field Upgradeis the final one players unlock, and it’s arguably the most powerful Field Upgrade in the entire game, and perhaps evenCall of Dutyhistory on the whole. But as well as being a satisfying ability to use, the Sleeper Agent Field Upgrade feels like a celebration ofCall of Duty: Black Ops' identity.
The vast majority ofCall of Duty: Black Ops' story contentrevolves around hidden government organizations, shady secret assassination missions, and subterfuge on both a small and grand scale. This Sleeper Agent ability taps into that identity wonderfully, giving players the opportunity to pull off their own high-stakes covert missions every match.
What CoD: Modern Warfare’s Unique Field Upgrade Could Be
WhenCall of Duty: Modern Warfareinevitably returns, it should come with its own Field Upgrade that taps into the series' unique identity. While there are plenty of covert missions intheModern Warfareseries, its content is primarily focused on both bombastic all-out battles and precise spec ops missions. The all-out war portion ofModern Warfare’s identity is already represented by Killstreaks like the Tactical Nuke, but its spec ops half could use a Field Upgrade of its own.
One idea for a potentialModern Warfare-inspired Field Upgrade is some kind of breaching ability that allows players to charge through a door and engage enemies in a slow-motion gunfight. Another idea is a Field Upgrade that allows players to pick any point on a map and appear there immediately, rappelling down from a helicopter stationed above.
