Summary

Back in 2016,No Man’s Skyhad a pretty rocky launch. Touted as the ultimateopen-worldspace survival and exploration game, fans were disappointed that the released game did not match the hype. That being said, Hello Games made a surprising decision, and promised players that the game would be fixed, and there would never be a charge for DLC or expansions in the future. So far, this has held true, andNo Man’s Skyis now considered to be an exceptional title.

Part of thecrafting systeminNMSis unlocking blueprints by visiting the relevant NPC on the Anomaly. Unlocking blueprints requires spending salvaged data, which needs to be found or looted. There are quite a few ways for players to get their hands on this important resource, with some being easier than others.

No Man’s Sky Merchants Guild Envoy

6A Gift From The Merchants Guild Envoy

Requires Standing With The Merchants Guild

Eachspace stationinNo Man’s Skyis aligned with one of the NPC factions, depending on which race controls the star system the station is within. For example, in star systems that are controlled by the Gek, the space station is aligned with the Merchants Guild.

The Merchants Guild Envoy will give gifts and rewards to players as they rank up their faction rating with the guild. One of the possible gifts that the player can receive is salvaged data. Unfortunately, it can take quite a lot of effort to grind faction reputation, and this is a very inefficient way of acquiring salvaged data.

No Man’s Sky Local Missions

5Local Mission Rewards

From Mission Agents On Space Stations

Every space station inNo Man’s Skyhas a mission agent that gives outprocedurally generatedmissions that take place in the local system. These missions are for one of the NPC faction guilds in the game, and can range from exterminating creatures, scanning flora and fauna, and also dealing with any local pirate threats, for example.

There is a very low chance that salvaged data will be given as a mission reward for completing a mission. The number of missions is limited, so it can take quite some time to actually find a mission that rewards salvaged data, and it can become quite grindy trying to get decent volumes of salvaged data in this way.

No Man’s Sky Nexus Missions

4Nexus Mission Reward

Take Missions From The Anomaly

Every player has access to the special space station named the Anomaly, which can be summoned to the player’s position when in space. This is the multiplayer hub forNo Man’s Sky. Once a player has docked at the Anomaly, they will find the Nexus right next door to the docking area.

Nexus missions have a better chance of rewarding a player with salvaged data than local missions do. However, some Nexus missions will require a group to complete. Overall, Nexus missions are a better option than local missions, but are still a less-than-ideal way to farm salvaged data efficiently.

No Man’s Sky Crashed Freighter

3Salvage From Crashed Freighters

Can Be Found In Storage Containers

By using a signal booster, players can locate structures on planets inNo Man’s Sky. It is random which kind of structure is found each time the signal booster is used, and a new POI cannot be discovered until the player has traveled to the last one the booster found.

One kind of POI that the signal booster can find for a player is a transmission tower. These transmission towers, once activated, have a chance of locating a crashed freighter. This crashed ship will have multiple buried storage containers that the player can dig out. Around 20% of these containers will have salvaged data inside.

No Man’s Sky Buried Technology Module

2Found In Buried Technology Modules

2 to 4 Salvaged Data From Each Module

Now we come to one of the two far simpler ways for players to get their hands on salvaged data when playingNo Man’s Sky. This method fits very well with theexploration gameplayloop and is very easy to undertake.

First, the player uses their scanning visor to find a Buried Cache POI. This should then be tagged using the E key. Once tagged, the player can head towards the POI and dig up the Buried Technology Modules. These can contain between 2 and 4 salvaged data. This process can be sped up by using a suitable exocraft to travel between the POIs.

No Man’s Sky Technology Merchant

1Purchased From Minor Settlements

This is by far the simplest way to get salvaged data in thisspace game. However, some players might find this technique a little cheesy, bordering on cheating. Using the same technique for finding crashed freighters, a player can locate minor settlements.

Each minor settlement has a technology merchant who may sell salvaged data. If they do sell this important component, there is a trick for buying limitless amounts. Simply buy all they have, then force a game save. Once saved, reload the game, and the vendor will be restocked. Keep doing this until enough salvaged data has been purchased.
