Summary

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredhas been a great experience across the board for both new and old players sinceits launchnear the end of April 2025. So far, it’s seen some very positive reception for its quality of life improvements and modernized mechanics, while still retaining the core of the classic Bethesda RPG.

Of course, the remaster’s standout feature is its use of Unreal Engine 5, breathing new life into the 2006 title with a massive graphical overhaul. But good graphics come at a cost, and that cost has been somewhat high forOblivion’s remaster. Luckily, the community has been putting in the work, creating a variety of mods that attempt to address the game’s performance shortcomings.

1Ultimate Engine Tweaks

Increased Clarity & Decreased Stutters

Ultimate Engine Tweaks was one of the first mods released on Nexus forOblivion Remastered, and it aims to address performance issues across the board while also improving the visuals in some areas.

The user P40L0X had been working with Unreal Engine 5 optimization for months before the remaster’s release. By making tweaks to the game’s default “Engine.ini” file, they’ve managed to give the game a boost in FPS, and even make it appear sharper and more clear, especially when using upscaling settings like DLSS and FSR.

Decreases Stutters & Input Lag

Much like Ultimate Engine Tweaks, Optimax - Performance by TheHybred is another performance mod forThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, also containing a handful of presets to choose from based on hardware and desired quality.

This mod mainly seeks to enhance the game’s performance by increasing FPS and decreasing stutters and input lag in the game. It does so by making various edits and changes to the same “Engine.ini” file used by the game that was mentioned before, making the installation pretty simple. This also means that the mod can’t be used with the previous mod without doing some manual tweaking, so trying each mod to see which works the best is ideal.

3Optimized Tweaks OBLR

Optimizes Hardware Usage & Memory Management

Optimized Tweaks OBLR is another popular mod aiming to fix some ofOblivion Remastered’s performance hiccups via tweaking some of the values in the game’s engine file. This mod in particular boasts some different improvements to go along with it as well.

The Optimized Tweaks mod works the same as the previously mentioned mods, but also offers changes for optimizing the game’s usage of both the CPU and GPU. On top of the performance boost from that, the mod author VynnGfx has also gone and made some changes to the remaster’s memory management and texture streaming. All these changes in combination should help some users with the stuttering and FPS drops that can be experienced in the game with little to no decrease in quality.

Overhauls Graphics & Performance With Tons Of Options

Ultra Plus for Oblivion is somewhat similar to the mods listed above by making its own tweaks to the same file. Where this mod is different, though, is all the other features and options it offers to users.

Ultra Plus markets itself as an engine overhaul for the game, providing both improved performance and visuals at the same time, with many different options to choose from. It allows players to change settings not present in the game menus, like fog and grass density, while also featuring its own improvements to the remaster’s lighting and reflections. This mod does have a bit more of an in-depth installation process, using its own utility called Ultra Mod Manager or “UMM” for short, but for those wanting improved performance and graphics, it’s one of the most popular options on Nexusmods forOblivion Remastered.

Gives Big Performance Increases On The Steam Deck

Oblivion Remastereduses Unreal Engine 5’s “Lumen” technology for its raytracing, and it certainly looks fantastic, but it comes at a heavy performance cost at times. Luckily, the mod LUMEN BEGONE can greatly help with performance in this regard, and its creator, HerrTiSo, even provided comparison shots of the mod running on aSteam Deckto show the improvements.

By default, there is no option to completely disable Lumen raytracing within the game menus, so the only option is to set it to “Low” and hope for the best. For those who don’t care much about real-time lighting, LUMEN BEGONE is a small mod that makes a tweak in the game files that simply disables Lumen altogether. So far, the mod has shown considerable performance improvements for some users, especially on the Steam Deck, as seen in the provided comparison screenshots above.

Disables Lumen Raytracing For Outdoor Locations Only

For those who still want the boost in performance provided by LUMEN BEGONE, while still keeping some of the beautiful ray-traced lighting fromOblivion Remastered, there is Disable Lumen Outdoors.

Created by the user Baronysmith12, Disable Lumen Outdoors simply does as the title suggests: it disables the game’s ray-traced lighting only for outdoor locations. The indoor locations are usually where the great lighting can be noticed the most, not to mention the outdoor areas usually being the most intensive parts of the game due to their scale

7Updated FSR DLL

Improves Performance When Using FSR

Like many newer games,Oblivion Remasteredoffers a couple of different options for upscaling technologies, such asNvidia’s DLSSand AMD’s FSR. Both options can help improve performance by running the game at a lower resolution and upscaling it to a higher resolution, which takes some of the strain off of the PC’s hardware overall.

These technologies are constantly improving, but aren’t always perfect. So here’s a smaller mod to wrap up this list called Updated FSR DLL by thomas199112. Simply put, the mod swaps out the FSR file fromOblivion Remasteredand replaces it with the more up-to-date version used inS.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Some users have reported that the newer version seems to boost performance when using FSR, although the benefits will vary depending on game settings and the hardware the mod is being used with.
