Summary

A lot ofanime character archetypestake inspiration from MMORPG classes. This trend is thanks to a heavy influx of Isekai anime, but many non-Isekai anime have this setup too. Tanky warriors use finesse with sizable swords and shields, while barbarians charge using spears and mauls. The silent rogues possess graceful agility, stealth, and lethal assassination daggers. Similarly, anime archers rely on pinpoint accuracy and deadly arrows while mages and sorcerers rain down a barrage of elemental magic on enemies.

Of course, there are numerous other types, but one that’s ridiculously underrated is the healer class in anime. They’re often nothing but side characters with the single purpose of playing a supporting role in their party. That’s the usual fate of healers, but some anime out there do give them the respect they deserve — that’s either a spotlight as a protagonist or giving them heavily prominent parts in the story. But some of them even break that mold with genuinely overpowered and unique abilities that make them stand out more than others. It’s that mix of usefulness, strength, effectiveness, and how differently they work that really makes them so different.

Fire Force (2019)

Updated on June 05, 2025 by Fatima Naeem:The article has been updated to include a few more popular anime healers.

Fire Forcerevolves around the mystery of spontaneous human combustion — humans turning into fire monsters. The Special Fire Force Companies are made up ofquirky and powerful pyrokinetics, with Kayoko Huang leading Company 6 and overseeing the medical hospital. While very confrontational, she puts aside her differences to help others and sincerely provides her expertise. She’s very level-headed and uses logic to devise practical solutions during tense moments.

Naruto

Kayako Huang is a fierce, no-nonsense person who uses precision. She visualizes every situation, including combat scenarios, as routine surgery. Her unique healing pyromancy accelerates her allies’ recovery and can just as easily dismantle enemies. She’s one of the most headstrong anime healers who doesn’t shy away from her responsibilities.

The Healer Who Was Banished From His Party, Is, In Fact, the Strongest

The Healer Who Was Banished From His Party, Is, in Fact, the Strongestis an anime that basically gives away the premise for its protagonist, Raust,in its title. He is a seemingly average healer with no combat potential and faces ridicule for it. With hard work and sincere mentorship, Raust becomes a ridiculously overpowered healer with ananomaly skill set that tremendously augmentshis strength.

While Raust develops overwhelming physical power, it’s when he’s severely injured that he gains a massive damage boost. Also, he can agro any enemy whenever he smiles, like a tank warrior. However, instead of vindictiveness, he uses his newfound strength to fight alongside adventurers on the front lines selflessly. Raust’s “never-give-up,“Naruto-esque attitude makes it easy to root for him as one of the best healers in anime.

The original torchbearer for powerhouse healers in anime is also thestrongest kunoichi of them all. Tsunade fromNaruto and Naruto Shippudendeserves her flowers as a force to be reckoned with, and as a Hokage who leads by example. In terms of healing ability, Tsunade was unmatched. She was capable of surviving lethal blows and direct impalement, then recovering instantly. Her medical knowledge was instrumental to the Leaf Village’s survival on several occasions — the onslaught of the Six Paths of Pain, and then during the Fourth Shinobi War.

Tsunade’scharacter is fun and versatile. She’s basically a grumpy granny with a gambling addiction, a strong leader for her people, and a literal protector on the battlefield. She can also knock people into next week effortlessly.

Bungo Stray Dogs (2016)

Farma de Medicis fromParallel World Pharmacyis an anime healer with a heart of gold. He utilizes a mix of magic and medicinal science — he was a medical professional in his pre-Isekai life — to make the world a better place. The guy is the textbook definition of humble despite reincarnating as a noble. His ultimate goalis to bring medical careto everyone, regardless of their social status.

Farma can make use of a host of divine abilities to diagnose and examine people suffering from different ailments. Once he finds the cause of the disease, he develops a treatment medicine to cure it. Skepticism from the jealous nobility, the religious order, and the general populace doesn’t deplete his resolve but fuels it.

The Great Cleric

Akiko Yosano is a paradoxical healer from the animeBungo Stray Dogs. Shehas seen the worst in humanity, but still dutifully fulfills her role as a medical expert with a maddening healing ability. The catch is that, to receive her healing, the person must be near death — the healing won’t trigger otherwise.

So, Akiko Yosanowon’t be able to help with light injuries or even severe ones that aren’t life-threatening. At least it would appear that way, because this off-the-rails lady will still not let her patient die. She carves up the person using a chainsaw, putting them through intense pain, andthenheals them. Not the most gentle of bedside manners, but it still saves their lives.

LucielfromThe Great Clericbucks the trend of one-dimensional healers in anime by balancing his overpowering ability with average combat. He’s not steamrolling regular enemies, but when it comes to cursed or unholy ones, he handles them with ease. Funny enough, it’s the healers in this anime who end up bossing around the other classes like bullies.

Luciel wants to heal adventurers without charging them, unlike most other healers in the world who only care about profit. His powers grow through intense training and discipline, but after realizing the downsides of taking shortcuts, he decides to push forward on his own terms. He’s determined to work hard to become stronger without relying on any magical boosts.

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magicstands out as one of the most enjoyable isekai anime in recent years. The way it blends action and humor, in addition to actually having a very hardcore healer main character, is simply too great not to like. The reason why it was such a fun watch was because ofRose— she’s a fan-favorite healer character who may as well have been the lead protagonist. With her fiercely intimidating aura and mighty combat skills,Roseputs the fear of annihilationin the demon king’s army. As for her healer status, she’s a former general of the kingdom’s army and an active frontline combat medic.

Rose puts her recruits through a hellish training regimen until it becomes their second nature and the norm. Her dedication to making amends for the past regrets of fallen comrades makes her a very compelling character. She stands out from other ‘place-holder’ healer characters because she’s not just strong, she’s relentless. Her intensity comes from a place of loss, but she channels it into shaping others into survivors.

Black Cloverhas a lot of healers, but one of the most effective ones in the entire series is Mimosa Vermillion of the Golden Dawn. Mimosa does lack in the active battle department, but that’s not her role primarily, either, so it makes sense. As a royal, she possesses massive mana reserves that allow her to heal for extended periods without draining much stamina or magic.

She’s not just capable of basic healing; she can regenerate tissue and even assist with limb restoration. While she starts relatively weak, she eventually develops offensive spells alongside her core healing magic. Mimosa uses plant-based magic, which also gives her the ability to support her team through recon and battlefield awareness. She remains mostly backline support and doesn’t play a huge role in the story itself, but her consistency and skill make her one of the most reliable and effective healers in the series.

Zenos fromThe Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadowsis a self-taught healer who practiced his ‘medicine’ on corpses from the slums he lived in. After being expelled from his adventuring party for being deemed useless, he took matters into his own hands and established an underground clinic in an abandoned building. Despite having no institutional backing or formal education, his reputation spread throughout the kingdom and eventually elevated his status to being one of the most respected healers.

His healing magic is extremely fast and precise. He can regenerate limbs, extract tumors, and even use his healing abilities as large-scale offensive powers toexterminate a large area of undead enemies. Zenos also contributes to combat using mana-based tools and defensive barriers. He’s like an entire one-man hospital by himself.

Sakura may have received a lot of flak in earlyNaruto, but she becomes a top-tier healer by the time Shippuden rolls around. She’s not the best healer in anime, butSakura’s unique skill set and Tsunade’s trainingmake her one of the most mainstream ones. Her Strength of a Hundred Seal gives her a constant regeneration boost and precise chakra control. It basically just allows her to bring people back from near death during battle. On top of that, she can punch craters into the ground. Unlike a lot of healer characters, Sakura has combat ability that holds up in active fights.

She may not be as emotionally resonant as other characters, but she’s an essential part of Team 7 during the war. Sakura is a solid hybrid of Tsunade’s brains, strength, and battlefield awareness. She’s also one of the few characters who wasn’t watered down by the next generation timeskip. If anything, she’s stronger in Boruto.
