Summary
Deltarune, the latest project by famous indie developer Toby Fox, had a huge impact on the gaming community due to its innovative RPG gameplay, its engaging narrative, its cast of lovable characters, its beautiful soundtrack, and more. On top of that, fans ofUndertale(Fox’s previous work) were delighted to find out thatDeltaruneis not only a spiritual successor to that game, but that many of its characters actually make appearances in this new adventure.
While the creator has stated that both video games take place in entirely different worlds, this hasn’t stopped him from including many cameos from iconicUndertalecharacters, mainly as inhabitants of Hometown in the Light World. Most of these cameos are just small and fun references, but to the surprise of many fans, some of them actually ended up playing an important role in the story, especially during the third and fourth chapters.Deltarunehas featured a lot of fascinatingUndertalecameos, but the following eight are the most noteworthy so far.
8Temmie
Everyone’s Favorite Silly Comic Relief Is Back
Temmie, a race of small cat-like monsters that live in the Underground, quickly became one of themost beloved creatures in all ofUndertale, mainly due to their adorable appearance, broken speech patterns, and absurd sense of humor. Curiously enough, they’re the avatar of Temmie Chang, the main artist of the game, and, while they’re not important to the plot at all, they have managed to become one of the game’s unofficial mascots, alongside the Annoying Dog (Toby Fox’s own self-insert character).
Fortunately for fans of these bizarre monsters, one of them, simply named Temmie, appears inDeltaruneas one of Kris’ classmates. Sadly, this time around, she can’t be fought as an enemy (because, like mostUndertalecharacters, she’s a Lightner), but she maintains her adorable speech pattern and silly sense of humor that all fans know and love. One of the funniest moments in Chapter 1 sees Temmie reject Kris’ offer to work on the school project together; she already has a partner: an egg.
7Catty And Bratty
These Iconic Shopkeeper Friends Are Now Sworn Enemies (Or Are They?)
Since the main settings of both games seem to be parallel versions of each other, it has been fascinating to see how Toby Fox and his team have switched up the characters' dynamics. InUndertale,CattyandBrattyweretwo best friends who worked together as vendorsand acted as typical, over-the-top and gossipy young women. Due to their endearing chemistry and unique designs, they both stood out as two of the most memorable NPCs in the entire game.
But, in the world ofDeltarune, things are quite different. Catty and Bratty are neighbors now, and every time Kris interacts with them, they repeatedly say bad things about the other, confirming that they’re not friends in this universe. However, as the story develops and the player keeps talking to them, they slowly realize that they do share a lot of interests every time they come across each other, hinting that Catty and Bratty may eventually become best friends.
6Alphys
The Brilliant Royal Scientist Is A Regular School Teacher Now
Alphysis one of the most important characters inUndertale, as she’s the Underground’s Royal Scientist who isresponsible for experimenting with human souls, creating Mettaton and indirectly causing the birth of Flowey. On top of that, her relatable nerdy interests and endearing relationship with Undyne helped her become a fan favorite.
Like many otherUndertalecharacters, Alphys’ role inDeltarunehas been a lot smaller in comparison so far, but it still fits her perfectly. In this world, she’s a regular school teacher, but she still maintains her dorky personality and her crush on Undyne, not to mention that she really does care for her students, even for the problematic ones, like Susie. However, some of her dialogue hints that, due to her knowledge of the town’s mysterious shelter, she may eventually play a bigger role in future chapters.
5Sans
Undertale’s Most Iconic Character Has A Smaller (But Weirder) Role This Time Around
There’s arguably noUndertalecharacter more recognizable thanSans, the goofy, pun-loving skeleton monsterwho’s actually fully aware of the player’s strange behavior and will showcase how powerful he is at the very end of the Genocide Route. He became a major fan favorite so, naturally, many players were ecstatic to meet him once again at the very end ofDeltarune’s very first chapter.
This time around, Sans has a smaller role, but he is still very memorable. He recently moved to Hometown alongside his younger brother, and he quickly befriended Kris’ mom, Toriel, because they share a similar sense of humor, which resulted in one of the most bizarre scenes in Chapter 4, where they can both be seen dancing together at the Dreemurr household. Sans also has a brief interaction with her ex-husband, Asgore, during Chapter 2, which not only was extremely awkward, but it also implied that he’s aware of how much his ex-wife resents him. While his personality is pretty much the same as it was inUndertale, Sans’ unusual involvement with the Dreemurr family has left manyDeltarunefans shocked, to say the least.
4Toriel
She’s The Main Character’s Loving Mother Figure Once Again
Toriel was definitely one of the biggest highlights ofUndertale’s first act, as this tender and loving monster didn’t hesitate to adopt Frisk the moment they fell into the Underground and took care of them so they couldn’t get out of the Ruins. Of course, it was later revealed that she used to be the Queen, but she left her ex-husband, King Asgore, because he was capturing the souls of every human who fell into the Underground to break the barrier between the two worlds.
InDeltarune, a new version of Toriel appears as Kris’ mother, and, while she does share a lot of similarities with herUndertalecounterpart – like her warm personality, her love of puns, and her disdain for Asgore –, she also acts quite differently in some regards. Needless to say, this is a much more grounded and, thus, imperfect version of Toriel; she’s trying to deal with her seemingly complicated divorce while also attempting to meet new people in town, which is why she quickly gravitated towards Sans. On top of that, the fact that the Roaring Knight tried to kidnap her in Chapter 3 heavily implied that she has an important part to play in the story, as she may be needed to unlock the shelter’s door.
3Asgore Dreemurr
A Kind And Soft Man Who Seems To Be Hiding A Dark Secret
Asgore Dreemurr, the King of the Underground, was undoubtedly one of the most tragic characters inUndertale, as the sudden death of his two children, Chara and Asriel, made him harvest human souls so he could break the barrier and free his kingdom of monsters from the Underground. Unfortunately, this horrible decision forced his wife, Toriel, to abandon him, and Frisk eventually has to face him at the very end of their adventure in one ofUndertale’s most emotional boss fights.
The chemistry between Asgore and the rest of the Dreemurr family inDeltaruneis similar, seeing as Toriel also left him in this world, but so far, it has not been explicitly stated what he did for his ex-wife to resent him so much. Toriel’s behavior may initially come off as cold and unfair, since Asgore seems like a really kind, loving, and friendly father/flower vendor who’s desperately trying to win her love back and is appreciated by many of Hometown’s citizens. However, the story slowly implies that he has actually done something terrible that may have justified Toriel’s actions and that he may even be working alongside the Roaring Knight. Because of all this and more, many fans theorize that Asgore will become an antagonist in Chapter 5 and beyond.
2Undyne
She Finally Became The Brave Hero Everyone Knows And Loves
InUndertale,Undyneis the leader of the Royal Guard who’s in charge of facing and defeating every single human who falls into the Underground, but, of course, she ends up having a major change of heart during the Pacifist Route. Despite her aggressive personality, she constantly showcases enormous courage, incredible strength and relentless passion, which explains why the monsters see her as a great heroine.
However, when comparing Undyne to herDeltarunecounterpart, the initial contrast is almost unbelievable. Her counterpart works as Hometown’s police officer, and since there’s little-to-no crime in the town, she can always be seen doing silly, over-the-top stuff, like flexing her muscles with a bunch of cars in a traffic jam. Even when Kris tries to tell her about the different Dark Worlds hiding around town, she laughs it off and doesn’t take them seriously. However, at the very end of Chapter 3, Undyne actually appears inside TV World and uses her iconic magic spears to save the main characters from the Roaring Knight. This was a major highlight of the entire story and confirmed that Undyne is becoming (or maybe already is)the brave hero everyone remembers fromUndertale. Unfortunately, she was immediately kidnapped by the infamous villain, and players will most likely have to rescue her in one of the future chapters.
1“Old Man” Gerson
Went From A Forgettable NPC, To A Legendary Secret Boss
MostUndertalefans may not even be aware of whoGersonis, seeing as he’s one of the game’s many vendor NPCs. Of course, since he’s very old, he has vast knowledge of the history of the Underground, which is definitely interesting, but he’s nowhere near as memorable as some of the other shopkeepers, like Temmie, Burgerpants, Catty, and Bratty. To the surprise of most fans, however,Deltarunetook a character as unimportant as him and turned him into one of the most legendary figures in the entire game.
For starters, throughout the first three chapters, players can find text and dialogue that mentions Gerson Boom, a deceased writer/historian from Hometown who seemingly knew something about the Dark World. InChapter 4: Prophecy, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei (and, by extension, the player) finally get to meet Gerson in person, seeing as he was reincarnated into a Darkner in the Church section of the Dark World. He initially acts as a feeble old man, but it slowly becomes apparent that he’s actually a lot wiser and stronger than he may seem, to the point that he teaches Susie how to use healing magic and even helps the “Fun Gang” defeat the Titan at the very end. On top of that, Gerson is the star of the chapter’s extra-hard secret boss fight, in which he turns into his Hammer of Justice form and challenges Susie to land a hit on him if she wants to get the legendary Justice Axe.
