Summary

Rebellion has recently confirmed thatAtomfallwas “immediately profitable” despite being released on Xbox Game Pass. Released back on March 27,Atomfallis a post-apocalyptic first-person action game set in the Northern English countryside, and its unique setting and complex investigation systems have made it quite popular.

Soon after release, it was already clear thatAtomfallwas Rebellion’s most successful launch. The title managed to surpass 2 million players in less than a month, greatly overcoming the success of other games made by the developer, including the recentSniper Elite 5.

Now, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley has been interviewed by The Game Business and revealed thatAtomfallwas immediately profitable, recouping its development costs soon after launch. While it’s currently unknown what the percentage of gamers who played the title via Xbox Game Pass is, this at least highlights that sales were likely good, and that the price paid to put the game on the popular subscription service was adequate.

Rebellion Comments on Atomfall’s Success

Last month, Kingsley reiterated the idea thatmuch ofAtomfall’s success could be attributed to its day one release on Xbox Game Pass. According to the executive, there was no clear data about this claim, but he believed that the Game Pass launch helped the discoverability ofAtomfall, leading to more sales on other platforms. The team was initially worried that the game could fall victim to sales cannibalization, but while it could have happened to some extent, the gain was seen as much bigger in the end.

Due to the profitability of the post-apocalyptic game,Rebellion seems to be considering a sequel forAtomfall. While this does not mean that a sequel is confirmed, interviews with Kingsley at least suggest that the post-apocalyptic game has had enough success to enter the list of franchises that could see more content coming out in the future.

At the moment, Rebellion seems to be focused on polishing the experience ofAtomfallrather than coming up with more content for the franchise.A recentAtomfallpatch has squashed some bugs, improved the game’s mouse controls and camera, and more, for example. WhileAtomfallwas generally launched in a stable state, problems such as the game’s audio going missing suddenly still plagued its release, but were fixed quickly. It remains to be seen what Rebellion is working on next, and hopefully, forAtomfallfans, a DLC or a sequel could appear sometime in the future.
