Summary
The excitement that popular anime bringsdrives fans all around the world to always be on the search for news about upcoming releases, especially when these dates mark the return of their favorite series. Some anime might have been delayed due to unknown reasons, and others due to sudden shifts in the direction of the project. But one thing is clear: These series have not been dropped, and at some point, they will return to bring joy to their fans.
So, this list spotlights anime that fans are excited to see return, and have been rumored to come back at some point. The list includes anime that have approximate dates of release, and others that are still waiting for confirmation from their producers.
Borutois one of those divisive anime series, with a protagonist that looks quite similar to his progenitor (Naruto) but follows a much different path from that of the beloved ‘eternal genin.’ His vision of the world, of Konohan society, and of what it means to be a Ninja are diametrically opposed to his father’s, and he is closer to Sasuke than his own daughter, Sarada, which adds flavor (and irony) to the relationship between the four characters.
After the Studio Pierrot scandal, the series went on a hiatus while the company underwent restructuring, which delayed the production line for obvious reasons, putting Boruto into an indefinite hiatus. But luckily, the producer company has revealed that the Second Part of theNaturoSequel will return, at a yet-to-be-confirmed date.
Driftersis a unique Isekai anime, with notorious people from different historical periods being transported to another world, to defend it from the forces of the Ends, which are basically their evil counterparts. From a Hannibal Barca suffering from senile dementia, to an obnoxiously accurate version of Oda Nobunaga, these Drifters are allied with the Octobrist Association (Mages) to fight against the forces of The Black King (Jesus Christ himself). Drifters is idealfor those who love gripping Dark Fantasy anime.
The series had a decent reception, with millions of fans loving Kouta Hirano’s characteristic take on violence, war, religion, (and other ‘hot potatoes’) all while maintaining that zany humor that was part of another of Hirano’s great works:Hellsing. Many fans are expecting its return, which has not been confirmed by Hoods Entertainment. One of the main issues here resides in the lack of source material, since the Manga is still ongoing, but at a very slow rate, meaning there’s not much to use to build a second anime season. With some luck on the fans side, someday the story might continue where the company left it with the OVA closing the first Arc of the War against the Ends.
Fate/strange Fakeoffered a teaser episode released in October 2024, and after that, went into cold sleep, promising to return in Winter 2025 at a yet undisclosed date. TheFateuniverse has tons of fans all over the world, and it’s Type-Moon’s flagship series, so readers might imagine the level of hype behind the return of this series.
After the highly acclaimed trio of OVAs (Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel),Fate/strange Fakecomes to break a drought period with more of the series characteristic epic battles, and with new Heroic Spirits joining what seems to be an artificial Holy Grail War, this time, set in the United States of America no less.
With the Counterattack Arc (which represents Arc 5 of the Light novel) already covered, fans ofRe: Zeromight already be asking what follows in this thrilling Dark Fantasy/Romantic anime. The Corridors of Memories would be the next Arc thatRe:Zero -Starting Life in Another Worldanime should cover. The studios behind this series will continue to be White Fox (for now), and the production of the fourth season will cover an entirely new storyline, so fans might wanna buckle up for one of the best developments in the series.
But with no confirmed date for the release of what would be the Fourth Season of this anime, fans might get itchy. Althoughthere are quite a lot of series likeRe:Zero, it’s hard to fill the gap with something truly meaningful if you are expecting to see how Subaru’s adventure continues.
The Rising of the Shield Herois confirmed to be returning for a fourth season, premiering in July 2025, but the date has not been disclosed yet. Fans of the series are eager to know exactly when they will be able to follow up on the story about Raphtalia’s origins, which will occur in the remote, isolationist Empire of Q’ten Lo. During the closing of Season 3, fans saw Wyndia, Naofumi, and Gaelion traveling to settle some scores with those who attacked Lurolona Village.
So, until then, fans have plenty of time to binge-watch all three seasons again, orfill the gap with anime similar toRise of the Shield Hero. Of course, the date might be closer than what fans expect, but it is also possible that the release is delayed, as it happened with Season 2. So, the possibility of a delay with an unconfirmed date still lingers in the air. Let’s cross fingers for a safe release ofShield HeroS4.
The Eminence in Shadowhas taken the hearts of isekai and dark fantasy fans by storm, and for a very good reason: It balances action and humor in a unique way. With the main protagonist being a mockery of overpowered characters (and still nailing to be a complete edgelord) posing as a charismatic villain, the plot delves into some of the most obscure topics and presents them in a grotesque, yet attractive way.
It is hard to say when this anime will return, since one of the arcs of the Light Novel/Manga (Return to Earth) that follows up with the story, will be covered by an OVA titledThe Eminence in Shadow: Lost Echoes, which is supposed to be premiered in Japan at some point in 2025. After that, theoretically, Season 3 of the anime would be announced, though with no clear date for the movie whatsoever, it is hard to discern an approximate date for its release. Fans are biting their nails here, but there’s not much they can do, except fill the gap withsimilar series toEminence in Shadow.
With the last part of Season 2 released back in 2023,Vinland Sagahas fans all around the world besieged with hype. Fans remember there was a 4-year cooldown time period between season 1 and 2, so it wouldn’t be so strange to have news of a possible release for Season 3 soon as late 2026, or early 2027.
With the Manga slowly but steadily approaching its epic conclusion,Vinland Saga Season 3will probably continue the early Eastern Expedition Arc (which was already covered partially on Episode 24 of Season 2). Still, with so much to tell and no news of its production state or potential release dates, fans might need to sit patiently for a while now and exploreother options similar toVinland Sagain the meantime.
