When it comes to exploring the vast Continent inClair Obscur: Expedition 33, the sheer amount of optional boss challenges the game has to offer outside the main story is by far one of its most impressive features. Not only that, thesebossespresent an incredible range of difficulty, with a select few being exceptionally challenging and true feats of mastery of the game’s mechanics.
If you’re looking to tackle all of these optional and secret bosses inClair Obscur: Expedition 33, here’s where to find them all, basic tips for how to defeat them, and their rewards.
All Secret Boss Locations in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 (How to Unlock)
The following guide containsEXTREME SPOILERSfor endgame content and character-related story content. Please read ahead with discretion.
The secret bosses listed below act as supplemental, exceptionally challenging, encounters that also provide more explanation about the revelations in Act 2 and Act 3 of the story, particularly with Maelle and Verso. They’re not required encounters to finish the main story, nor do they affect the ending you receive. However, defeating some of them can unlock hidden achievements and provide exclusive, powerful rewards (Pictos, weapons, etc.) for your efforts.
Do be aware, however, that Clea and Simon in particular are absolutely consideredENDGAMEbosses, arguably the most difficult in the entire game, and should not be attempted until you’ve at least reached Level 90 (preferably higher) and maxed out your weapon upgrades, Pictos upgrades, and Luminas.
Alicia
You can encounter Alicia as part of a personal sidequest for Maelle, far up at the peak ofThe Reacheroptional location. It’s directly north of The Crows location on the Continent and west of Visages island. To access this place, you need to have reached at leastRelationship Level 6 with Maelleat the Camp. You also need to have Esquie’s flying ability which is unlocked at the beginning of Act 3.
The Reacher is one of the longest/tallest optional locations in the game, and it takes considerable time to reach the very top where Alicia is waiting.
Once you encounter her, a series of cutscenes will play out that ultimately culminate in asolo battle between Alicia and Maelle, so make sure to prepare her beforehand. While she is considerably strong, by this point in the game, with the amount of upgrades and powerful weapons you should have at your disposal, the fight should be pretty manageable, even as a 1v1.
Defeating Alicia will reward you with the ‘Painted Me’ haircut for Maelle, the Lithum weapon for Maelle, and Resplendent Chroma Catalysts.
Clea
Clea is found in the depths of theFlying Manoroptional location. You’ll need Esquie’s flying ability to reach this place, which is unlocked at the beginning of Act 3.
To unlock the atelier inside where she resides, you first need to find and defeat her four painted creations seen in the glass display cases near the entrance. They’re scattered in different corners of the manor and are no pushovers, so prepare accordingly.
Once you’ve dealt with them, the doors to Clea’s atelier will unlock, and you may proceed to her boss encounter. Depending on your builds, the fight against Clea is considered among the toughest in the entire game, even more than anything the Endless Tower throws at you. Each turn she’ll summon countless Nevron phantoms to bombard you with attacks, and failing to parry even one of them will reward her with over half a million HP of healing per turn. If there ever was a time to max out your party’s capabilities, this would be it. She’s alsoweak to Void damage, so take that into account.
Upon defeating her, you’ll earn the absurdly powerful Clea’s Life Pictos, 1 x Perfect Chroma Catalyst, and 3 x Grandiose Chroma Catalysts. You’ll also unlock the ‘Clea’ hidden achievement.
Simon
Simon is a fascinating character found deep beneath the Monolith. To reach him, you need to enter theRenoir’s Draftsoptional location, which is accessible on the surface of the water a short distance south of Visages island.
Once inside, you need to fight your way through the powerful creations of Renoir’s Drafts (this is very much considered an endgame area, so tread carefully) until you reach the golden tree at the back of the location. Use the nearby Expedition Flag to rest up before entering, and follow the ominous pathway inside until you may jump off it. This sends you plummeting to a special area called ‘The Abyss’ where Simon awaits. One more Expedition Flag is found here, somake sure to prepare everything you possibly can before engaging him.
Simon is considered themost difficult battle challenge in the entire game, with a fight consisting of three phases (unless you manage to skip the third), an astronomical health pool, and relentlessly powerful attacks that you MUST dodge/parry or risk dying almost immediately.
Should you manage to defeat him, you’ll be rewarded with the Simoso weapon for Verso, 2 x Perfect Chroma Catalyst, and a staggering 50 x Colour of Lumina. You’ll also unlock the’Peace At Last' hidden achievement.
All Optional Boss Locations in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 (How to Unlock)
There are a variety of optional bosses scattered across the entire Continent, and thorough exploration is the key to finding all of them. Some will be easily found out in the open on the overworld map, while others are hidden away inside optional locations full of Nevrons and other challenges.
Be aware that some of these bosses are very much consideredENDGAMEchallenges. Engaging them in battle is only recommended once you’ve leveled your party up to at leastLevel 70-80, and geared them with fully upgraded weapons and themost effective buildspossible.
Golgra
Golgra is a character you first encounter very early on in the story during Act 1, when first passing through theGestral Village. Among the other combat challenges available there, the most formidable of them is against none other thanthe Chief herself, Golgra.
However, doing so at the earliest opportunity is not exactly recommended because her attacks and health pool are ridiculously high. She’s considered an endgame encounter to return to far later on in the game, once your party has far better stats and gear.
you’re able to actually encounter her in two other instances, however, where fighting against her is more manageable. One is at theDark Gestral Arena, which is a floating location southeast of White Tree. The other instance is at theSacred Riveras part of Monoco’s relationship sidequest. This location is a short distance north of Monoco’s Station.
Grown Bourgeon
The Grown Bourgeon is a special variant of the Bourgeon Nevron that’s found inside The Small Bourgeon optional location, which is sandwiched between the Hidden Gestral Arena, the Ancient Sanctuary, and the Abbest Cave.
To spawn the Grown Bourgeon, you need to complete the sidequest for the small white Bourgeon there, who wants to grow big like the other Bourgeons. For that, you’ll need tocollect Bourgeon Skinsby defeating other Bourgeons found around the Continent. Once the small Bourgeon is able to grow big enough, it’ll become the Grown Bourgeon, and you can choose to battle it if you want for extra items.
Make sure to also pick up theExpedition 53 Journalfound there.
Grosse Tete
TheGrosse Teteis by far one of the most infamous boss encounters in the game, due to its obnoxious mechanics. There are actuallytwo instancesin which this unique Nevron can be encountered. The one you’ll likely stumble upon first is on the overworld map (seen above), standing directly in front of theCoastal Cavelocation. The other instance is found deep inside the Flying Manor location, where it serves more as just a random encounter than an actual boss.
Both encounters function exactly the same mechanically. Grosse Tete’s main attack is leaping into the air and slamming down onto the party relentlessly. The more turns that pass, the longer this slamming attack becomes, forcing players to dodge up to a maximum of 24 slams in a row. If the party hasn’t defeated it by then, once 12 turns have transpired, Grosse Tete will self-destruct.
Rewards for defeating it include the Warming Up Pictos and a Resplendent Chroma Catalyst.
Chromatic Abberation
The Chromatic Abberation is one of the most difficult Chromatic-tier bosses in the game, so don’t take it lightly when engaging. you’re able to find it in the overworld on a floating island northwest of Dark Shores. As such, you’ll need Esquie’s flying ability to reach it, which will unlock at the beginning of Act 3.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Abberation, you’ll be rewarded with the Brumaro weapon for Monoco along with the Longer Burn Pictos, 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Abbest
TheChromatic Abbestis one of the very first Chromatic-tier bosses you can encounter in the game. It’s located inside the Abbest Cave, which is down the left path from where you first enter the Continent’s overworld map for the first time.
Defeating it will reward you with the First Offensive Pictos, 2 x Resplendent Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Benisseur
The Chromatic Benisseur is located on the far east side of the Continent, in the mountainous region with few landmark locations aside from Stone Wave Cliffs to the far northwest. However, it does patrol the path where you need to push the nearby Chromatic Petank, for reference. You will need Esquie’s flying ability to reach this area.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Benisseur, you’ll receive the Benisim weapon for Lune, 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Bruler
The Chromatic Bruler is another boss you’ll stumble across early in your journey across the Continent, as you may find it in the overworld standing right near the Gestral Village (as seen above). It’s one of the most approachable Chromatic bosses as well for early-game players, so feel free to tackle it whenever you wish.
Defeating it will reward you with the Powerful Revive Pictos, 2 x Polished Chroma Catalyst, 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Greatsword Cultist
The Chromatic Greatsword Cultist is found deep withinSirene island, and you’re likely to stumble across them while exploring each level of the area (‘Dancing Classes’ is the nearest Expedition Flag).
As a stronger version of the Greatsword Cultist, their attacks are very much the same, albeit more punishing with longer combos. They boast a considerably high health pool for this point in the game, so consider your strategy carefully. They’re weak to Dark damage, so consider any attacks and/or weapons you have with that element.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Greatsword Cultist, you’ll be rewarded with the Sireso weapon for Verso, 2 x Resplendent Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Demineur
The Chromatic Demineur is located on an elevated cliff directlynorth of the Stone Quarry and Forgotten Battlefield. It’s especially easy to spot by the giant golden mine weapon it carries.
This boss is a much stronger version of the Demineur enemies you encountered in other locales such as Flying Waters. As a floating nevron, it also has exceptionally high evasion stats, so you need to keep that in mind while deciding your battle tactics. The easiest method to take it out is via Free Aim shots at its golden mine weapon, which acts as its weak point.
Beware of its explosive fire-elemental attacks, which can leave Burn ailments on your party, on top of devastating damage. As such, this boss ABSORBS Fire attacks, so be sure not to use them. Itsweakness is Lightning damage, so consider weapons and attacks of that element.
Defeating the Chromatic Demineur will reward you with the Angerim weapon for Lune (one of her best), 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Jar
The Chromatic Jar is found on the far side of a remote islesouthwest of White Treeand directly south of the Endless Tower. This boss features some especially punishing physical attacks with its lantern staff, so be ready to dodge/parry as needed.
Defeating this boss will give you the Jarum weapon for Maelle along with 2 x Resplendent Chroma Catalysts and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Luster
The Chromatic Luster boss is located deep in the trenches of theForgotten Battlefield, on the far right side of the main area. From the point where you encounter the Fading Woman, immediately turn right and explore the trenches in that section to find the Chromatic Luster lurking at one of the dead ends.
Defeating this boss rewards you with the Lusteson weapon for Sciel, the Energising Parry Pictos, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Goblu
The Chromatic Goblu can be found in the overworld, on an elevated platform surrounded by mountains, northeast of the Coastal Cave. You’ll need Esquie’s flying ability to reach this area.
This particular Chromatic boss is absolutely no pushover and should be approached with caution. In fact, it’s probably one of the Chromatic bosses that you should leave for last.
Its featured jump attack has it bounce continuously in the air while inflicting slam damage, and if not dodged, this will quickly wipe your party out. It’ll also occasionally spawn flowers to use to buff itself with shields. That said, it’sweak to Lightning damage, and melting its health as quickly as possible with your best attacks is a priority.
Defeat it and you’ll receive the Gobluson weapon for Sciel (higher level than the one purchased in Coastal Cave), 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Glissando
The Chromatic Glissando is the primary encounter inside the Sirene’s Dress optional location, which is found on Sirene Island (separate from the main entrance to Sirene). To access it, you’ll need to have Esquie’s swimming ability (a given by that point) and at least Relationship Level 6 with Lune. At that point, her relationship sidequest to investigate the area will become available.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Glissando, you’ll receive the Choralim weapon for Lune, the Ballaro weapon for Monoco, 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Moissoneuse
The Chromatic Moissoneuse is located on a remote islesouthwest of Visages island, the same one where you’re able to also find a pair of Mimes facing one another. When you engage this boss, be mindful of its incredibly high defense, so breaking and stunning it as soon as possible is a priority. It’s alsoweak to both Fire and Dark damage.
Upon defeating it, you’ll receive the Moisson weapon for Sciel, along with 2 x Resplendent Chroma Catalysts and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Thunder Eveque
The Thunder Eveque is one of many different Eveque nevrons you’ll come across in the game, but this particular one is found in the overworld, east of the Stone Wave Cliffs cave in an area surrounded by mountains. As such, you’ll need Esquie’s flying ability to reach it.
Upon defeating this boss, you’ll get the Breaking Death Pictos, 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Orphelin
TheChromatic Orphelinis found deep within theYellow Harvestoptional location, which you can find directly below the floating Hidden Gestral Arena and northwest of the Gestral Village. This boss will be flanked by two other Orphelin nevrons upon engaging it, so consider dealing with them first. While not necessarily resistant to any elements, it isweak to Earth damage, so consider that for your strategy if need be.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Orphelin, you’ll receive the Kralim weapon for Lune along with 6 x Polished Chroma Catalyst and 15 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Troubadour
The Chromatic Troubadour is found deep within theFlying Waterslocation, down an optional route from the Lumerian Street Expedition Flag. This route will have you grapple and run across the terrace of a crumbled building, and upon grappling back down to the ground on the other side, this boss will be waiting. It has a weak spot on its helmet and isweak to Light damage.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Troubadour, you’ll get the Troubadim weapon for Lune (one of her best starting ones), 2 x Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Lancelier
The Chromatic Lancelier is technically the very first Chromatic-tier boss you can encounter in the game, as it’s found early on inSpring Meadows. From the Grand Meadow Expedition Flag, head right past the Portier random encounter and keep right until you see the Chromatic Lancelier at the end of the path.
Due to its attacks and higher health pool compared to other Nevrons in the area, this boss can be a bit overwhelming for early-game players, so decide carefully if you want to tackle it immediately or later.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Lancelier, you’ll be rewarded with the Lanceram weapon for Gustave/Verso, the Augmented Attack Pictos, 2 x Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Petank
The Chromatic Petank is considered the most challenging Petank encounter in the game, and you’re able to find it on the east side of the Continent, in the overworld. Similar to other Petanks, in order to engage it in battle you first need to guide it to its special platform that traps it in place. Follow the map above along with thisChromatic Petank guide.
While fundamentally the same in its mechanics, the Chromatic Petank differs in that it won’t flee from the battle at any point. The true challenge comes in dealing with the smaller Petank minions it summons to aid it via additional attacks and health recovery.
Upon defeating the Chromatic Petank, you’ll be rewarded with the Anti-Stun Pictos, 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, and 5 x Colour of Lumina. You’ll also unlock the ‘Carreau Parfait’ achievement.
Chromatic Ramasseur
TheChromatic Ramasseuris another unique boss encounter that you’re able to find at Visages island, specifically in the Sadness Vale.
To defeat this boss, you have to parry every single one of its attacks to perform a counterattack and damage it. This is because, despite what your HUD shows on the left, the Chromatic Ramasseur gets an infinite number of turns to attack. The only way to disrupt this is by counterattacking enough times until you’re able to break and stun it.
The faster you can do this, the better, so coming back to this optional boss later on in your journey may be the better choice. However, if you feel confident in your stats and parrying abilities, then feel free to tackle it immediately. It isvulnerable to Light damage, so take that into account.
Defeating the Chromatic Ramasseur rewards you with the Augmented Counter II Pictos, Resplendent Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Glaise
The Chromatic Glaise is an optional boss found onSky Island, which is a floating island directly above the isle where the Chromatic Reaper Cultist is also found. Serpenphare is also floating directly south of this location, for further reference.
Defeating it rewards you with the Urnaro weapon for Monoco, along with Grandiose Chroma Catalysts and Colour of Lumina points.
Chromatic Portier
The Chromatic Portier is located on a small floating island in the southeastern region of the overworld map. As such, you will need Esquie’s flying ability to reach it. The island is strangely not visible on the map, so it’s been marked above.
This stronger version of the Portier Nevron is not to be trifled with, as its attacks are far more relentless. It isweak to Fire damage, so make note of that when equipping your party.
Defeating the Chromatic Portier will reward you with the Anti-Blight Pictos, 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalysts, and 5 x Colour of Lumina.
Chromatic Reaper Cultist
The Chromatic Reaper Cultist is found lurking on a small isle on the central easter side of the Continent. It’s directly beneath the Sky Island optional location, for reference, and close to Serpenphare’s location as well.
Similar to its normal Reaper Cultist variant, landing most physical and elemental attacks on this airborne boss is incredibly difficult due to its high evasion stats. Free Aim shots are the best way to ensure consistent damage. This battle is one of attrition in that regard, so using creative techniques is the key to victory. Burn stacks can also help apply more damage per turn.
Make sure to pick up theExpedition 43 Journalat the tent nearby afterward.
Sprong
Sprong is one of the most unique bosses found in the game’s overworld, and one that you’re likely to see and pass often during your travels. You’ll find it lurking in the watersnorthwest of the Stone Wave Cliffs Cave, and can engage it with Esquie’s swimming ability.
However, Sprong is consideredone of the game’s stronger bosses, and you don’t necessarily want to go into battle against it on impulse. Its attacks consist of physical slam combos with its arms and charged energy attacks from its head. Depending on your party’s average level and stats, these otherwise basic attacks can be devastating, so dodging/parrying is essential. Engaging this boss is only recommended at minimumLevel 50 or higher, preferably at least once you’re able to break the 9,999 damage cap. That will help you contend with its 2+ million health points.
Upon defeating Sprong, you’ll be rewarded with theCheater Pictos(allows party members to play twice in a row) and 3 x Grandiose Chroma Catalysts.
Serpenphare
While Sprong dominates the sea,Serpenphareis the boss who dominates the skies above the Continent. You’ll find it floating southeast of the Boat Graveyard, and also south of the airborne Sky Island location. With its bright pink markings, it’s otherwise hard to miss, and you won’t be able to engage it until you’ve unlocked Esquie’s flying ability at the beginning of Act 3.
Pun not intended, Serpenphare is up there among the most difficult bosses in the game, and one you don’t want to encounter until you’re truly ready for this unique battle of attrition. Along with some hefty stats for your preferred party members, andLighting-element attacks, you’ll want to have Pictos/Luminas that help you recoup AP as quickly as possible. This is becauseSerpenphare’s main gimmick is stealing all of your party’s AP every turn, and in turn boosting its speed stat.
Upon defeating Serpenphare, you’ll receive the Energy Master Pictos (every AP gain increased by 1) along with 1 x Perfect Chroma Catalyst and 3 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst.
