AsMonster Hunter Wildstravels down its post-launch roadmap, the game continues serving the many hunters that have stuck with it since its successful launch. Despite initial worries thatMonster Hunter Wildswould be light on endgame content, a sizable portion of the player base has stuck around to enjoy the first Title Update, and now an additional major update that rounds out spring. Preliminary information on the summer-bound Title Update 2 has already been announced, so there is plenty more monster-hunting action to look forward to, even beforeWilds’ expected expansion arrives.
That interstitial patch deserves highlighting as well, since Capcom has rolled out the red carpet forMonster Hunter Wilds’ first crossover. Fellow Capcom titleStreet Fighter 6has lentMH Wildssome cosmetic content, but the real star of the show is Akuma, one ofStreet Fighter’s most popular series regulars. This antagonistic martial artist has moved to theMonster Hunteruniverse as not just a layered armor set, but as himself, complete with special battle actions thatMonster Hunterhas never seen before. Because of this, the idea of futureMH Wildscrossovers is even more exciting, and Capcom has the perfect franchise ready to fulfill this potential:Dragon’s Dogma.
Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma Seem Made For Each Other
Capcom has made extensive use of its large library of intellectual property in pastMonster Huntercosmetic collabs, but one modern franchise has surprisingly been absent from the festivities so far.Dragon’s Dogmais the one other series in Capcom’s library that is a dead ringer forMonster Hunter’s sibling series, sharing significant influences in their battle mechanics and aesthetic.Monster Hunterhas more abstract anime influences, andDragon’s Dogmaemphasizes going on more involved RPG adventures, but both inevitably end up with parties of diverse combatants taking down giant monsters, and that deserves to be acknowledged.
What Would Go Into An MH-Dragon’s Dogma Crossover
If theStreet Fightercrossover is any indication of howMonster Hunter Wilds’ crossovers are intended to play out, there’s a lot of funMHcould have in bringing inDragon’s Dogmaelements.DD’s Pawns, Rook in particular, could show up as quest NPCs and assistant hunters in the crossover’s quests, and at least one notable layered armor set with aburning hole over the chest representingDD’s Arisencould be the reward. Other additions like Handler and Palico outfits, accessories, and gestures would come as well, but the main event would have to come in the crossover’s gameplay.
How Monster Hunter Wilds Could Recreate Parts of Dragon’s Dogma
Monsters And Hunters Alike Can Emulate Dragon’s Dogma
Thanks to their shared concept of monster-hunting in an open world, there are many ways thatMonster Hunter Wildscould adaptDragon’s Dogmainto a special quest. Lowballing it,Monster Huntercould set up a quest paralleling a hunt forDD’s titular Dragon, likely ending with some kind of Elder Dragon confrontation. Matching Akuma’s special actions, players can either gain cooperative moves akin to what an Arisen can do with their Pawns, or they can gain access to a few combos and abilities fromDragon’s Dogma 2’s Mystic Spearhand Vocation. However, this is, again, the more subdued result.
If Capcom wants to get audacious with this crossover, it can pull aMonster Hunter Worldmove and bring in an entire guest monster as the climax of a distinct endgame quest chain. The Dragon is, once again, a good candidate, but even sporting a special gimmick that allows players to climb on it like inDragon’s Dogma, it risks being too similar toMonster Hunter’s own Fatalis and equivalent Elder Dragons. Plenty of other candidates are available, including a Hydra, the Gazer, or even Daimon fromDragon’s Dogma’sDark Arisenexpansion. No matter whatMonster Hunter Wildsincorporates, aDragon’s Dogmacrossover would work too well to pass up.
